Sun Microsystems Buys MySQL
Santa Clara-based Sun Microsystems said today that it is in a deal to acquire MySQL AB for approximately $1B. MySQL AB is the firm behind the popular open source database MySQL. According to Sun, it will pay approximately $800M in cash for all of MySQL's stock, and assume $200M in options for the firm. The deal is expected to close in Q3 or Q4 of Sun's fiscal 2008. Both Sun Microsystems and MySQL cited a match between MySQL's and Sun's culture and business models behind the acquisition. According to the firms, MySQL will become part of Sun's Software, Sales, and Service organizations; Marten Mickos, the current CEO of MySQL, will become part of Sun's executive leadership team. MySQL AB, is headquartered in Cupertino and Uppsala, Sweden, and employs 400.
