Google Axes Engineers, Recruiters

Mountain View-based Google said Wednesday afternoon that it is making cuts at the firm, given the state of the economy. The search engine giant said Wednesday that it has reduced the number of recruiters at the firm by approximately 100 positions, and is cutting its engineering offices in Austin, Texas; Trondheim, Norway; and Lulea, Sweden. Google said the cuts in its recruiting organization are due to the fact that it needs fewer people focused on hiring, and the cuts at its engineering groups are due to the difficulty of coordinating all of its engineering offices. Approximately 70 employees are affected by the engineering office closures; the firm said it hopes to move those employees to other offices.
