Cisco Takes On Smart Grids
San Jose-based Cisco Corp reports that it is taking on the smart grid market, saying that it plans to deliver "end-to-end, highly secure" infrastructure for utility companies. According to Cisco, its plan includes developing a "complete communications fabric" from electric generation, to business, and Internet-based home standards to help manage power supplies and energy consumption. Details on the new products were not disclosed, but the firm said the plans include solutions for IP-based backhaul for smart meters, solutions to help companies optimize their energy use, and using its switches and routers for connecting electricity substations.
