GPS Firm Rolls Out Gulf Oil Spill App
Sunnyvale-based Trimble, the developer of GPS technology and related software and systems, said today that it has launched a new mobile app and website targeted at helping people track the Gulf Coast oil spill. Trimble said that its new Map the Spill mobile app and website will allow users on the web, plus on Android and Blackberry smartphones, report on the oil spill. The firm said an iPhone version will also soon be available. Trimble said the free application will be made available to scientists, government agencies, non-governmental agencies to help assist in clean up efforts. Trimble's GPS technology products are widely used in surveying, construction, agriculture, fleet and asset management, public safety and mapping. The firm said the effort is part of an ongoing effort to provide charitable assistance to government agencies and communities around the world to enable them to respond to natural disasters and accidents.
