Google Rolls Out Free Phone Calls On Gmail

Mountain View-based Google said Wednesday that it has rolled out a new feature which will allow users to call anyone in the U.S. and Canada, for free, directly from Gmail. According to Google, starting today, users can dial contacts from Gmail, or dial using a keypad. The new feature requires the installation of Google's voice and video plug-in, and also will show a user's Google Voice phone number as an outbound caller ID. The firm said calls will be free for at least the rest of the year, with calls to other countries billed at "very low rates", including rates as little as $0.02 per minute to U.K., France, Germany, China, and Japan.
