Google Buys Skybox Imaging For Satellite Surveillance Network

Mountain View-based Google has acquired Skybox Imaging, a developer of a network of "microsatellites" which take very high resolution photos of the Earth's surface. Google is paying $500M in cash for Skybox. Skybox said it will use Skybox not only for Google Maps but also its Internet access and other projects. Skybox is based in Mountain View, and was venture backed by Bessemer Venture Partners, Canaan Partners, Khosla Ventures, and Norwest Venture Partners.
