Instacart Offers Up Employee Positions To Contractors In NYC
San Francisco-based Instacart, the on-demand, grocery delivery service, said today that it is inviting its contractors in New York City to apply as employees of the companies, the latest in a series of moves across the startup's markets. According to Instacart, the program is now available in all of the 16 cities it serves. Instacart's program allows in-store shoppers to become part time employees at the company, instead of independent contractors. The move at Instacart comes as many, on-demand startups--and in particular, Uber--have come under careful scrutiny of tax rules around contractor payments. Instacart said the move by contractors to employees means that it will contribute to Social Security, Medicare, unemployment insurance, and workers' compensation for those employees, who will also receive more training and supervision--and also will be guaranteed to be paid more than the minimum wage in its locations.
