Apple Buys Akonia Holographics For AR Technology
Cupertino-based Apple has acquired a developer of holographic technology for use in augmented reality lenses, the company disclosed on Wednesday. According to a terse statement, Apple confirmed that it is buying Longmont, Colorado-based Akonia Holographics. Financial details of the acquisition, and Apple's plans for Akonia were not announced. Akonia says it has over 140 patents pertaining to holographic systems and materials, and was working on developing technology to enable AR headsets that the company said would be "thin, transparent & light-weight", while achieving high field of view with low manufacturing cost. Akonia Holographics was led by CEO Ken Anderson; the company's other founders are Mark Ayres (CTO) and Fred Askham (Vice President, Materials Development).
