Santa Clara-based NVIDIA said on Monday morning that it has acquired chip maker Mellanox, in a $6.9 billion deal. Mellanox makes chipsets used for high performance computing (HPC) interconnects. According to NVIDIA, it will pay $125 per share in cash for Mellanox. Both NVIDIA and Mellanox make hardware which is used for HPC systems, particularly in the supercomputer, scientific computing, data anlytics, and related areas.
