Google Takes On Facebook

Mountain View-based Google said today that it has released OpenSocial, a set of open application programming interfaces (APIs) for social networking web sites. Google said the effort is being supported by Bebo, Engage.com, Friendster, hi5, Hyves, imeem, LinkedIn, mixi, MySpace, Ning, Oracle, orkut, Plaxo, Salesforce.com, Six Apart, Tianji, Viadeo, and XING. The new API effort is focused on helping developers create applications for social networking web sites, using a single API specification. According to Google the its partners represent an audience of about 200 million users globally.
