Autodesk Buys Softimage For $35M

San Rafael-baed Autodesk and Avid Technology said late Thursday that the two firms have signed a definitive agreement where Autodesk will buy "substantially all" of Avid's Softimage business unit, in a deal worth $35M. Softimage develops 3D software used for the animation market. According to the firms, Autodesk intends to continue developing and selling Softimage's core product line, and will incorporate other technology into Autodesk's products. Softimage was founded in 1986, and acquired by Avid in 1998 from Microsoft. Microsoft acquired Softimage in 1994.
