Yahoo Opens Data Center In Western New York
Sunnyvale-based Yahoo said Monday that it is opening up a new data center, in Lockport, New York, in Western New York state. The firm said the new facility also has received $9.9M in a sustainability grant from the Department of Energy, and uses Lockport's cool climate and hydropower to reduce energy usage at the facility. Yahoo said it expects the design of the data center to result in less than 1 percent of the facility's energy consumption going into cooling for the facility, and will consume 40 percent less energy and 95 percent less water than conventional data centers. The site will support Yahoo's Yahoo! Mail, Messenger, Flickr, News, Sports, Finance, and Answers services.
