Google To Pay $22.5M Over Safari Privacy

Mountain View-based Google will pay the FTC $22.5M to settle the company's issues with placing tracking cookies in Apple's Safari internet Browser, the FTC said Wednesday. The Federal Trade Commission had charged that Google had misrepresented to users of Apple's Safari Internet browser that it would not place tracking “cookies” or serve targeted ads to those users. The FTC said the settlement is the largest FTC penalty for violation of a commission order ever. Those cookies were placed on the computers of Safari users via DoubleClick's advertising network.
