Google Opens Knol

Mountain View-based Google announced this morning that it has opened up access to Knol, the firm's project around creating web content around specific topics. Google first announced the project in December of 2007. According to the firm, each article within its Knol project will have an author, or group of authors. Similar to Wikipedia, Knol features articles about topics, ability to search for topics, and ability for readers to suggest edits which can be accepted, rejected, or modified by authors. Google said it would provide revenue sharing through Google AdSense to authors of knols, and also said it has inked an agreement with the New Yorker magazine to include one cartoon per knol from the firm's cartoon repository.
