Impossible Foods Gets $75M For The Burger Which Isn't Actually Beef

Redwood City-based Impossible Foods, the developer of a vegetarian burger which looks and tastes like a beef burger--complete with the juicy red liquids that are the hallmark of a burger--has raised $75M more in a funding round, the company said on Tuesday. The funding was led by Temasek, and also included Open Philanthropy, Bill Gates, Khosla Ventures and Horizon Ventures. Impossible Foods says its key ingredient is "leghemoglobin", a soy-based protein which contains an iron-containing molecule similar to that found in meat. Impossible Foods says that "heme" is what makes "meat uniquely delicious." The company's burger is made directly from plants, has a drastically smaller environmental footprint than the meat from animal. More information »
