Cisco Buys OpenDNS
San Jose-based Cisco said this morning that it will acquire San Francisco-based OpenDNS, which provides a private, DNS service to help deliver better security to PCs and other devices. Cisco said it will pay $635M in cash and assumed equity awards, plus retention-based incentives for OpenDNS, which becomes part of the Cisco Security Business Group. OpenDNS replaces the standard, domain name servers (DNS) used to translate Internet URLs into network IP addresses, allowing the firm to screen out malicious threats, detect phishing, and monitor network activity. OpenDNS was venture backed by Greylock Partners, Minor Ventures, and Sequoia Capital.
