Google Launches Open Source Project
Google has launched a new, open source project which is geared at allowing developers to develop offline web applications. The firm said Wednesday that its new Google Gears product allows for the creation of browser extensions that allow web applications to continue running when there is no Internet connection available, or with slow and unreliable connections. The company has rolled out a version of its Google Reader RSS aggregation platform that uses the new Google Gears open source project. The project focuses on new JavaScript APIs used for caching of data and multithreading; the firm said the new project works on Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms.
