Piper Picks Up $2.1M For DIY, RPi Computer Kit
San Francisco-based Piper, a startup which develops a do-it-yourself (DIY) kit which leverages the Raspberry Pi and Minecraft to interest kids in building their own computer, has raised $2.1M in a seed funding round. The funding came from Princeton University, Reach Capital, 500 Startups, FoundersXFund, Jaan Tallinn (co-founder of Skype), and Jay Silver (founder of Makey Makey). Piper's kit lets kids put together a "computer"--made up of individual components like a Raspberry Pi, LEDs and sensors, mouse, and more--along with Minecraft--to teach basic computer architecture and programming concepts.
